Design Condition Air conditioning equipment is designed to operate at its rated capacity and efficiency at one set of design conditions. This design condition is generally considered to be at an outside temperature of 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and at an inside temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with a relative humidity of 50%. When a piece of equipment is rated at 3 tons, it will perform at a 3- ton capacity or 36,000 Btu/hr under the stated conditions. When these conditions change, so does the unit capacity, (net refrigerating effect). 1 ton of refrigeration = 12,000 Btu / Hr. 288,000 Btu / 24 Hr.
